Reserach and Planning: Location Recces

This is the location recce for are torture scene, we added the props ourselves to make it look like a typical horror torture place. We moved the ladders and the card board boxes behind her to give the dirty effect to the room, we also added the props behind her so they are in shot of the filming.

Reserach and Planning: Props and Images from first scene

  •  I took these images to maybe use on my film poster and magazine.
  • These are the images i took whie filming the torture scene.
  • First image you can see a long shot of the girl and the also the mise en scene around her. The props which we used to tie her up and put in her mouth.
  • The lighting we used was the full long light which was i the barn we also used a lamp for a few other shots.
  • The screw drivers, saws and the other tools we placed to set the scene of the scene we was filing the torture scene we used these to make the horror more realistic.

Planning and Research- Script

  • This is the script we produced for the news read scene, which we filmed today.
  • We will have a voice over to welcome the story then use are newsreader to read out the script.
  • The voice over will say 'Teenage Girl Missing Tagged in Torture Scene'.
  •  This is what are actress(news reader) this is her script:
  • Louise Smith a 17 year old girl has been missing for over 48 hours and just a few hours ago her friend 'Sarah Conrad' was tagged in a explicit photo of the young girl being tortured on the social networking site Facebook.

Research & Planning: Actor Release Form

This is a actor release form for the News reader, we made he sign this to give us promission to use her during are trailer.

Planning and Research- Draft Story Board

Planning and Research- Call sheet

Research & Planning: Shooting Schedule

This is a shooting schedule i have produced on when we will be filming the rest of are scenes which are this week and weekend. The location we want as been confirmed and filming times and arrangements with cast have been arranged.

Planning and Research- Shot list

  • This is a shot list of a scene we have already produced for are film trailer.
  • This helps us focus on what shots we are going to use whilst we are filming and makes us organised with are cinematography.

Planning and Research- Production Meeting

  • Over the weekend, me and my group decided to start filming a scene.
  • We choose the one which we think will be most difficult, and that's the scene where the girl is being tortured. We had to wait till it was dark.
  • We already decided we would film this on a farm and add are own props to set the horror scene.
  • We went shopping a bought the props we needed for the set up. Like rope to tie round her head to make it look like shes being gagged and tape to tie her to the chair and fake blood.
  • We used Laura's chair to tie her to, and my top which we ripped and put blood and mud on to to make it look realistic.
  • The farmers workshop which we asked the farmer if we could use, was a good mise en scene for are trailer, we moved drills and hammers around to make it look like a real horror scene.
  • Filming went well and we thought about the cinematography throughout filming using different shot types at different angles, we also thought about editing using some zoom and zoom out shots.
  • We will edit the film when we produce it in final cut.

Planning and Research- Film magazine draft

  • This is my film magazine draft.
  • I decided to call it 'EXPOSURE' as i think this is a good title for a film magazine as it relates to films.
  • The three colour scheme would be Black, Grey and Red as these colours are connations of a typical horror.
  • The image which will be the main image is an image i have already took whilst filming of my actress.
  • I will have facebook in the top corner of the magazine to show the readers what the film is based on.
  • The Title of the film 'Offline' will be just above the main image.
  • Down the sides will be the sub story's , and I'll  add a quote in as a lot of film magazines do this.

Planning and Research- Analysis of Magazine cover

  •  This is the 'Empire' magazine which promotes many films and reviews.
  • The film this magazine is promoting is 'The Dark Knight' you can tell by the dark colours and low key lighting used in the background connotes a horror look.
  • The bright green and purple brings out the text to make it stand out to the audience.
  • The main image is of the main character in the film, just by looking at him tells you he is scary by the face paint on his face and the his facial expression, where he is smirking which contrasts with the setting he is in which looks like a prison, also is eyes are the same colour as the green of the text this is so the colours flow and relate.
  • The text which says 'He's a cold blooded, mass murdering clown' this give a typical convention of how you would describe a character in a horror film.
  • This magazine again is a popular film magazine 'Total Film'. Total film doesn't promote many horror films.
  • I choose this front cover, as it does relate to what my trailer is about as i am using a social network scheme.
  • By looking at the front cover you can tell the genre could be said to be a drama. The font is original and classy this connotes a drama film.
  • The way the magazine is layout with the images of people faces shows what the film is about i really like this idea and have been looking at using this for my own.

Research and Planning: Actor Release Form

This is the actor release form for are main character Georgia Pinder who is playing Louise Smith in are trailer. We did this to show she is prepared for the filming that she will be in.

Research and Planning- Actor Head shots

  •  We decided while planning are film trailer that are main character would be a young girl so straight away we knew that a male would not be suitable.
  •  Although this is a young girl we was not to sure if she would fit the kind of girl we was looking for she very natural and we wanted a more girly girl to show vulnerability.
  •  This girl looks very similar to are main actress we was stuck between the two as they both are very young and good looking girls which is what we are looking for, due to her being unable to attend al the auditions, we decided Georgia below was the most suitable for are trailer.
  • She looks very Innocent and we was looking for a small light haired girl i think Georgia is the perfect match for are main character.

Research and Planning: Micro element

For my film trailer i am in charge of by myself of the mise-en-scene.

List:
Setting- The setting for the trailer will be set in a study room, as the main character is a student. Make out that she is in her halls at university. Also a clip will be set in the woods, or a park.
Props- Props we will need are, computer, access to facebook, study books, glass(that she knocks over), chair, table, black cloak, bloody knife, lamp.
Costumes- Casual student clothing on college girls, black cloak for killer.

Make up-
Make up on students, just usual not to much. If we show killers face, then use white make up and have blood on his face, and dark eyes.Lighting- Low key light most of the way through for the horror effect.

Composition- Concider have things off centre the disorientation to show the space as the audience in horror are waiting to something to come into the off centre space.

Cinematography is an element me and my partner will be sharing for the film trailer.
Low Angle
High Angle
Close up
Long shot
Medium shot
Fast zooms
Panning
Tracks
Tilting
Craning
Establishing Shot
Sound is another element ill be sharing with my partner:
Would be using Garage Band for creating are sounds/music.

For the non digetic music for are trailer we are thinking of using inspiration from 'Kings of Leon, Closer' as the beat of music relates to are film.

Dial up tone, to computer, the facebook pop up for chat and a new message. Maybe have a voice saying you have one new message, repeating maybe. Disconnect tone also will be used.

Research and Planning- Character Profiles

Louise Smith: Young attractive innocent looking girl, aged between 16-19. Need her to be good at acting as its a very intense scene being shot, and many close ups to show emotion and vulnerability.
Trevor West: We decided that we didn't want to show Trevor during the trailer to make people wonder who it is, and what he looks like. This makes the audience want to watch the trailer more, as they wonder. We stereotype Trevor to look like a bald middle aged man, we a spooky look about him.

Louise's Friend: We suspect Louise friend who gets tagged in the photo to be similar age to Louise and be her friend so able to take images of her and Louise to add at the start of the trailer.

News Reader: Not to sure what gender male or female, late 20's id think. Dressed smart and speak clearly and confidently.

Research and planning- Production schedule

I produced this production schedule to help me work out when i will be doing the work that needs to be done by a certain time, i did this to help me organise myself.

Plannig and Research- Auditions for actors for trailer.

I created this poster to put up around college, to help me and my group find the perfect actors/actress's to be in are teaser trailer, we handed it out in the drama studio as we thought there would be where the best talent is.This is a post i posted on facebook where i have over 1000 friends to promote my new film trailer and also to get more auditions to find the right cast.

Research and Planning- Plan for rest of the week.

Wednesday- Today, i analysed a film poster and then used the connotations to help me produce my plan for my own film poster.

Thursday- Finish my story board, come up with a font for my trailer title 'offline' and produce more plans for my poster, and get feedback off peers.

Planning and Research- Conventions

Title stands out.
An image that relates to the genre and also shows the narrative A spooky look to the poster as its advertisement. Slug line- ideas? Stars names? Date? Cinema or DVD. Edits, to make the poster flow.
This is my first plan of my teaser trailer poster, i have decided i want to use a face mosaic in the shape of the main character screening and make it look like a reflection from the computer with disintegrated photos of herself when you look closely, the facebook font will be seen, i would add this in it as i think using face book relates to a lot of peoples everyday life which makes it more scary.

Research and Planning- Analysis of film poster

Genre- The genre of this poster is horror, as you can tell by the title and also the emotion on the women's face, with the silhouette in the background gives an horror approach to the poster.
This is a typical horror convention as a silhouette is used in the background with also a back in light to show blur spookiness about this image.

This tag line also shows this poster is a horror genre, as the word 'evil' is used.

Narrative-
By looking at the poster you get a good incense to what this horror film is about, firstly by the title this gives the viewers an idea that this film is about when a starnger calls. The silhouette of a man in the background gives the conventions of a typical horror using silhouttes of male figures. Also how the women is holding a phone with a worried facial expression, which gives a horror feel to most of the audiences everyday uses.
Media Language/Layout- The black background gives connotations again of a horror, the creme light colour for the title makes the title look a bit like lighting, a glow effect which is on her face as well, and also the backing light comes behind the silhouette as well.

Audience- The average horror audience, ages between 15-28 some may be older.

Representation- Typical female victim, to what looks like a typical male to be the villain/murder/killer, a typical horror connation representation. The actors a stereotypical for horror films.

Research and Planning- Meeting

Me and my group have had a meeting while we discussed who was doing what for a teaser trailer. We decided that myself will do mise-en-scene and my partner will do editing and we both will do sound and cinematography. We already have an rough idea on what we are going to do for are teaser trailer, this will help us produce are story board soon. We also went to watch Social Networking the film in cinema together we did this is as it relates to are film trailer as we are basing it on facebook, although it wasn't a horror so it didn't relate although we did get some cinematography and mise en scene ideas for are trailer.

Research and Planning- Sound test

This is my planning sound test that me and my group produced on garage band, are teacher given us a genre to use and ares was comedy. We researched on you tube different trailers and what kind of music there use in comedy's and came up with this. This helped us learn as a group how to use garage band to produce are own music for are horror film, me and my partner are sharing sound for are trailer so we would be be involved in this.

Research and Planning- Treatment

This is my first treatment for my teaser trailer:

*Facts and figures (on a computer screen in facebook font) to begin with of how people have been harassed on social networking sites. This will be interspersed with images of people having a good time, preferably the actors in the film.

*Theme made music in the background, something popular and quite catching. But at the same time making it quite spooky.

*Offline - which may be the title of the film. Computer screen goes blank to that, then cuts to a girl on a computer on researching murders related to facebook the computer then switches on to facebook with out the girl logging in.. then pops up one notification with her face scribbled out or battered, next screen goes blank looks behind her silhouette of male behind.

Research and Planning- My September pod cast.

Research and Planning- Target Audience

The target audience I think for my horror film trailer would be from 15 years onwards, this is because I think my trailer would have a 15 age certificate. I researched film reviews off sites like YouTube I found that horrors are quite mixed genders but vary on what type of horror it is some females may not like. I think my horror would attract both males and females. I also made a questionaire which I gave to a mixed age group of different ages, to help me find the target audience for my film.

The demographics of my audience will be mainly students I think, from the last year of high school up to university, many will go in couples or groups to horror films. The physcographics of my audience would interest people who socializing and share an experience some films have so much advertisement behind them they feel they have to watch the films to not feel left out.

The socio-economic group for my trailer would be D- E which is unskilled workers and students mainly as most top business men may not be interested in horror films.

Research and Planning: Conventions

For are coursework we are doing a teaser trailer, this challenges our abilities as last year we did a music magazine this shows are new coursework will challenge us compared to are last piece of coursework.

Teaser Trailer- should be from 45 seconds to 90 seconds, trailers are to show important aspects of the film to grab your attention and make you want to see the film. Its only short as you dont want to give to much of the film away to its audience.

The trailer wouldn't be possible for me to make as it wouldn't be feasible for me. The animation would be to difficult and expensive to make. Plus i want my horror to be more realistic.

This trailer is something i am looking at to do, i have came up with the idea of using facebook but changing it in to a horror, i like the layout how they have filmed people using facebook but my trailer to be scary not a thriller. So would be different i just like the idea of the camera angles looking on to the facebook and the props.

I like the sound and editing in this trailer and i am going to try make it similar in mine, the effects have made it jumpy and the sound makes it more realistic this horror is one i want mine to relate to with the effects and sound.

Conventions-

Editing- the editing is fast pace, and makes the audience jump while watching it. I will use jump cuts to show the fast continuity and also fades from text to black.

Sound- The sound has to relate to the trailer, i will use repetition to give the loud scary effect. I will use my own sounds from peoples voices. But i will also add my own theme of sound to my trailer.

Cinematography- Over the shoulder shots and a main shot in horrors, close ups of people expressions is used a lot. Point of view , hand held camera effect made be used aswell.

Mise en scene- Day to day student type costumes., scene- realistic home. Computer and social networking.

Research & Planning: Audience Feeback

What is your age?

How long should a teaser trailer last?
What genre do you like?
The results from my questionnaire are as follows..

  1. What aspects of a trailer grab you?

Research and planning- Audience Research

Today we created a questionnaire to get feedback from different audiences and see what they like and prefer in film trailers.

The results for my question air was that most people i know including friends and family mixed ages between 16-45 enjoy horror films, and gave me ideas of what they look for in a horror film trailer eg- jumpy parts, things you don't expect, give a scene of the plot, gory bits.
Age i think will defenitley watch it is 16-25, both male and female as the nature of the film is based on facebook and that is mainly for older teenagers. From my question air results these are the most likely to enjoy horror films.

Research and planning- Analysis of teaser trailer one

  • Media Language- The trailer starts with non digetic sound, with reconsible music.
  • Then use a type write font / a computer like screen 'Everyday 2 billion cell phones ring' with digetic off screen sound to the sound of someone text it on a mobile phone buttons.
  • Then two women sat in a room and theres a track from the women to the cell phone, there is a close up of the mobile so you can see its ringing clearly then the characters are blurred in the background to show thats the highlight they want the audience to see.
  • Another slide with a type writer font 'Sometimes you answer the call..' the eclipse meaning , which shows they want to get a certain messege across.
  • Then theres a jump cut to the cell phone, and voice over saying 'One missed call' which reflects on the title.
  • Another jump cut to the blue screen and type write font saying 'and sometimes you should'nt' , then zooms into the font to make it stand out more this is when the trailer gets more tense.
  • Then followed on by a scream and a shot of the 2 girls on the phone, then a voice over speaks which makes the audience know thats what the character has heard over the phone.
  • The music then changes to what it sounds like a trangle which gives it a spooky effect for a short time this is played there is then a flash of the girl again fast pace editing is used to show suspence.
  • The trailer carrying on with fast past editing flashing to black screen which isnbt very clear but this is to give it a horror effect.
  • There then is flash of the girl screaming (digetic sound).
  • The words 'What will it sound like' come up which obvouisly refers to the scream we just heard. Then When you die' comes up, fast pace editing of many different shots of explosions and creatures. The music then changes to fast pace drums to give a danger outlook.
  • The screen the goes black and the typerwiter comes up 'One Missed Call' which is the title and the sound of the traingle comes back on.
  • There is then a 5 second scene of the a man and the women and you here her scream then the realse date and coming soon. This is to show intense for the audiences and make the jump.
  • Audience - The audience for this trailer i think will be 15 +
  • I think this film is aimed at both genders, but more to males as its a grusome horror, although many will watch it at the cinema in couples.
  • I think the people watching this film will be intelligent as you have to work out whats happening during the film, i also think the people will have to be quite outgoing to enjoy the thrill and suspence of the trailer.
  • I think it will be working class people and students mainly who watch this film.

  • Genre - Horror, although the title doesn't seem that scary it is a strange name and some horrors do this now.
  • As soon as it starts it play a light simple music, which makes you wonder what genre it could be.
  • It then goes on to the typewriter and you see when the words become horrorish and the music sounds more scary.
  • Thats when you can tell the genre, the editing which is fast pace and jump cuts which again shows the genre as many horrors use this.
  • Also the spooky music shows this.

Research and Planning- Regulation

The BBFC (British board of film classification) regulate what certificate films should be given.
The common certificates that are given are:

U- Suitable for all ages
PG- Parent guidance- suitable for all ages if parents accompany young children.
12A- Suitable for over 12 unless accompanied with an adult.
12- Suitable for over 12 year olds.
15- Aged 15 and over.
18- Aged 18 and over.
R18- To be shown in special licensed cinemas, or supplied in licensed sex shops and adults not less that 18 years if age.

After researching different age certificates i have decided i would like my film to be either 15 or 18 as most horror films are regulated at this age, i would like to put my film up to an 18 to help promote it as most people know if a film is scary the age certificate would be 18.

The BBFC mark the age restrictions on the amount of violence, sexual scenes, horror/fear.

Research and Planning- Teaser Poster

This is my teaser poster that i produced, i use this genre as this is what genre i want to use for my teaser trailer. I edited the girls face to make her stand out from the background and made the background black and white i did this to emphasis the character. The title matches the girls lips and eyes , the tag line relates to the title and give you an inset to what the film is about.
